1 . Should I Remove the Laptop Battery For A Desktop Replacement Laptop?

Q: I have a laptop at home which I use as a desktop replacement. As such, 99% of the time the laptop is being used it is plugged in. I wonder if I should remove the battery so that it is not permanently being charged, or does the laptop cut off the current to the battery once it is fully charged? I do unplug the laptop when I turn it off.

A: When using a laptop as a desktop replacement the battery should not be left in for long periods of time. The laptop will over time discharge the battery. Remove the laptop battery – making sure that it is charged to 40% and store it in a dry, warm place. Ensure that it is wrapped protectively and nothing will be dropped on it.

The laptop battery should be re-installed every 3-4 weeks and allowed to fully discharge. Leaving a laptop battery in storage for longer than this without using could cause the laptop battery to fully discharge as the circuitry of the battery itself consumes power.

Leaving a battery in a laptop while using an electrical outlet for long periods of time will keep the battery in a constant state of charging up and that will reduce the life cycle of the laptop battery.

Remember that when you have removed the battery from a laptop while using with an electrical outlet – the automatic battery backup is no longer functional. Make sure to plug your laptop into an uninterrupted power source (UPS) not directly into an outlet or surge protector.

2. How long does it take a laptop battery to charge? Its new, I want to fully charge it.

For your first use you must fully drain the laptop battery until the laptop goes into hibernation. After that plug in your charger and allow it charge for 12 hours or depending on what the technician has told you. 12 hours is the max and you can use it while charging. I'm not saying it would take 12 hours to charge rather it is the first charge to really awaken the ions after a long time. It's good to charge new laptop battery for three times at first. After that it will take less than 2 hours to fully charge your laptop battery.
This is recommended so that the laptop battery will heat up for the time allowing ions to reawaken.

Some general tips for laptop care include: avoid extreme temperatures, don’t leave a laptop outside in cold weather or leave it in a hot car. Cold batteries can’t create very much power and hot batteries will discharge very quickly. Use electrical power when available to keep battery charged. Don’t let your laptop go for long periods of time without using the battery.
